The rise in use of wholly electric vehicles is not limited to just domestic use. As the need to reduce our carbon footprint increases public and service vehicles are also going green.
When Castleford based, Pelican Engineering, approached Planet Platforms with their work at height challenge, it was a scenario we had seen many times before in the rail industry but not specifically within the bus and coach sector.
The banks of batteries used to power their range of Yutong buses and coaches are within individual compartments on the vehicle roof. Prior to delivery, Pelican engineers need to safely access these areas.
Working at over 3 metres above ground level presents a serious risk and mitigating this hazard was essential. Furthermore, any solution had to have the flexibility to accommodate more than one vehicle type.
The solution was to design, manufacture and install a double-sided work platform spanning 9m down each side of the vehicle.
Constructed from lightweight aluminium tube with padded protection on all areas that could contact a vehicle, the complete system can be quickly setup in a matter of minutes. With limited space within the depot, a small overall footprint was achieved by ballasting the base sections.
Benefits to the customer
1. Wholly bespoke design that manages work at height risks
2. Lightweight and simple to use
3. Faster vehicle turnaround times as all areas of the roof are accessible
