Aluminium roof walkways, such as Kee Walk®, provide several real and tangible benefits to the building owner/tenant and personnel tasked with working on a roof. Operating on a roof will mean that you will be working at height and doing so safely has to be the starting point when assessing the needs of personnel.
Aluminium roof walkways demarcate a safe access route
There are hazards associated with working on roofs that need to be assessed, their risk minimised and if possible, eliminated entirely. The two that present the most risk to users are open and unguarded edges and fragile surfaces, such as skylights.
Aluminium roof walkways provide a clear and delineated path for personnel to follow. By siting the walkway away from these hazards, it is possible to prevent personnel from approaching these areas. Where conditions prevent this from happening, then implementing other safety measures will offer further protection. This could, for example, be edge protection in the form of KeeGuard or skylight protection like Kee Cover and Kee Dome.
Aluminium roof walkways that protect
In demarcating a defined route across a roof, an aluminium roof walkway protects these areas from damage that would be caused by pedestrian access. Ours are suitable for modern roof types including trapezoidal profile composite or built-up and standing seam metal roofs. It can be used on flat, barrel, and sloping roofs, with steps and a traverse option allowing access to be created for virtually any roof configuration from 0 to 35 degrees.
Lightweight and strong aluminium roof walkways
The static load of a walkway is important to consider, and the overloading of a roof can have catastrophic consequences. By manufacturing the walkway from aluminium this risk is removed, as in terms of material density, aluminium is incredibly lightweight and strong. It is approximately a third lighter than steel, which illustrates perfectly why we make our roof walkways from it. The material can withstand heavy loads without deforming, even after significant loading over long periods of time.
Corrosion-resistant aluminium roof walkways
All roof walkways will be subject to the elements of rain, sleet, and snow. Aluminium is a corrosion-resistant metal that naturally generates a protective coating. The coating formed is extremely thin and is generated when aluminium meets an oxidising environment. This protective aluminium oxide layer helps protect the surface of the metal from corrosion, so our walkways don’t rust.
Aluminium roof walkways with longevity
On larger buildings with many potential hazards, roof walkways can span hundreds of metres. This would present a significant capital outlay for anyone investing in an aluminium roof walkway, so having one that will last and stand the test of time is imperative. Quite often the client specification will state a minimum of 20 years and we have no hesitation in committing to this timescale. When our walkways are correctly and regularly maintained, they can last for a very long time and we’ve seen that aluminium won’t rust, which also helps with this longevity.
Roof void aluminium roof walkways
Not all roof walkways will be situated on the top of a building, as the roof void above a false ceiling is where essential infrastructure such as lighting or comms cabling, air conditioning ducting and piping is located. These supplies all need inspecting and maintaining, which in turn will lead to someone working at height.
For the same reasons why, we choose aluminium for rooftop walkways the same also applies when installing one in a roof void.
It is incredibly lightweight and static loading in a roof void will be of equal importance and again aluminium’s strength comes to the fore.
